You’d think I would have read more books with all the traveling I did in October. Somehow, that proved not to be true this month. I read three that I’ll tell you about…and there’s one I refuse to acknowledge.
The Last Devil to Die, Richard Osman ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I just can’t get enough of this group of septuagenarian super sleuths! In the fourth and latest book in the Thursday Murder Club series, Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron, and Ibraham find themselves searching for who killed their antiques-dealing friend. As with each book, there’s much more to the story than the surface mystery. The group encounters new foes and new friends, and experiences a tender loss of their own. From the whimsy of Joyce to the intelligence of Elizabeth to the softer side of Ron to Ibraham’s calming presence, I want to be friends with the Thursday Murder Club. It’s worthy of a BUY.
The Invisible Hour, Alice Hoffman ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I have often said that my book club introduces me to titles I wouldn’t typically pick up on my own, and this is one of those books. Ivy and Mia, mother and daughter, live in a commune called the Community. After a change in her circumstances, Mia’s love for books and knowledge motivates her to escape the Community and build her own life. Inspired by The Scarlet Letter and her love for Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mia finds a way to go back in time to express her gratitude and love for the author himself. Hoffman is the author of Practical Magic, which I haven’t read, but I did love the movie. Based on that, I expected more magic in the story, which didn’t really unfold. The storyline is unusual and intriguing, which helped me to read until the end. This book is a BORROW.
5-Star Weekend, Elin Hilderbrand ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Hollis Shaw is a food blogger living her best life when her husband tragically dies (not a spoiler). To begin living after the initial grief, Hollis pulls together a 5-Star Weekend, inviting four of her closest friends from each part of her life to her home on Nantucket. The weekend holds all the allure and fun one would imagine, but it also brings its share of drama and secrets, including one that changes everything Hollis believes about her marriage. Come for the food, stay for the drama. It’s a BUY!
