It’s officially fall, y’all!
This is my absolute favorite time of year! Football, plaid, boots, Thanksgiving, and pumpkins…just a few of my favorite things that make this season my absolute favorite. Although lounging by the pool with a book is one of my favorite summer activities, it doesn’t get any better than curling up with a warm cup of coffee and a book once the weather turns cool.
Before sharing the titles that are on my list for the fall, here’s a recap of those I read this summer. Of the 10 books I shared in my summer reading blog post, I read seven:
No One Knows – J.T. Ellison
First Comes Love – Emily Giffin
Here’s to Us – Elin Hilderbrand
Me Before You – Jojo Moyes
The Nest – Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney
Eligible – Curtis Sittenfeld
For the Love – Jen Hatmaker
I thought maybe I was being a little zealous thinking I could knock out 10 books this summer (especially since Eligible was a book and a half in itself!). Even though there were three from my list I didn’t read, I still read 14 books this summer!! In addition to the seven above, I also finished The Royal We (Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan), Before the Fall (Noah Hawley), Summer Secrets (Jane Green), Living Well, Spending Less (Ruth Soukup), What Alice Forgot (Liane Moriarty) and The Woman in Cabin 10 and In a Dark, Dark Wood (both by Ruth Ware).
I went into the summer being super excited about the Elin Hildebrand’s new title, but I have to be honest and say it wasn’t my favorite work by her. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it (and I can’t wait for her October release, Winter Storms). Where I thought it would walk away with the award of my favorite overall read from the summer, that would have to go The Royal We. Who doesn’t love a royal love story, right? Of the new summer releases, First Comes Love is my first choice.
It’s a new season and time for fresh pages. I’m moving the three books from summer list that I didn’t get to onto my fall list. That includes The Year We Turned 40, Platform and Truly, Madly, Guilty. For awhile now I’ve been a true chick lit girl, basically reading fluffy romances. Somewhere over the summer though I remembered how much I love a good suspense novel. You’ll see that theme continued in the books joining the previous three for my fall list. So here goes:
I Let You Go, Clare Mackintosh – This book and the one following I took on the recommendation from The Popcast’s Jamie Golden. The story revolves around a mom struggling to deal with the loss of her son and the investigation surrounding the tragedy.
Disclaimer, Renee Knight – A gripping suspense story about a woman finds a novel on her nightstand that, as she reads, unfolds the story, and secrets, of her own life.
The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy Schumer – There’s too much heavy stuff in life, so you have to insert some laughs. While she can be a bit rough at times, I do find Amy Schumer funny. I’ve read a couple of reviews on this one, so I’ll go ahead and say I may read it just far enough for a few laughs and then let it go. We’ll see.
The Status of All Things, Liz Fenton & Lisa Steinke – This pair are also the authors of The Year We Turned 40, which is rolling on to this list from the summer. I had two Ruth Ware books in the summer, so this is my double author for the fall. This is the story of a woman who rewrites her fate through Facebook, as all her status updates become life. Imagine that!
Uninvited, Lysa TerKeurst – Full disclosure, my church small group is reading this book as our fall study. Lisa is a wonderful storyteller and author, and she fully knows the hearts of women. This particular book deals with how we live life loved as we overcome feeling left out, lonely and less than.
The Couple Next Door, Shari Lapena – My first fall read from the Book of the Month Club! A thrilling story about a young couple and their neighbors, “a twisty rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal and the secrets between husbands and wives.”
There are two new releases I’m looking forward to getting my hands on:
The Things We Wish Were True, Marybeth Mayhew Whalen – Yes, another suspense novel! This one about the residents of a town in North Carolina who may look all-American, but that are harboring a web of secrets behind their white picket fences.
The Perfect Girl, Gilly McMillan – This is the story of a musical prodigy with a genius IQ who learns your past will always find you.
Whew…between football and these books where will I find time to do laundry or finish binging Gilmore Girls?
I cannot say enough about how my reading life has been impacted by Modern Mrs. Darcy and the Book of the Month Club. Check out Anne’s recommendations and try out the BOTM Club for 50% off!
I wanna know: what was your favorite read of the summer? And what’s on your list for the fall? If you’ve read any of my choices, share your thoughts!
