It’s Good Friday. Is it really good? This is the day Jesus was crucified. On the cross He cried out asking God why he abandoned him. Present day, we are mostly homebound, sheltering in place, unable to enjoy spring weather or to attend a Good Friday prayer service. We, too, might feel abandoned. Good seems like the worst adjective for this day.
But that’s all about the surface. We are homebound out of love. Because of our deep care for family, friends, neighbors and community, we shelter in place to protect others and ourselves from spreading the coronavirus. We stay in now so we can go out later. That is good.
On the surface, it looked like Jesus’ crucifixion and death was the end. But dig deeper. Out of love, Jesus chose to die for us. He who knew no sin became sin for us. He endured the weight and consequences of our sin so He could give us His righteousness. He died then so we could live now. And that is very good.
In that light, the word good doesn’t seem good enough. ✝️
